Every house comes with responsibilities. Just like your car requires regular oil changes, your home needs regular maintenance to avoid future headaches.

The good news is that you can undertake most of these tasks on your own. Here's a checklist:

Check List:

Seasonal tasks: Autumn Check windows and doors for air leaks. Get your fireplace serviced. Flush your garden hoses and store them indoors (in the garage or garden shed). Check your driveway for cracks and have them resealed if necessary.

Seasonal tasks: Winter Check that all locks and latches on your doors and windows work properly. Check the silicone around showers and bathtubs and repair as required. Remove shower heads and clean any built-up residue. This will help with water pressure.

Seasonal tasks: Spring Check all exterior drainage to ensure that rainwater will flow away from the house. Check your house’s façade to see if any paint is chipping. Are there any holes in the brickwork? Get those air conditioning systems ready for the South African summer! Repair or replace damaged window putty. Clear dead plants and shrubs from the house. Pay close attention to decorative vines!

Seasonal tasks: Summer Check the grout in bathrooms and kitchens and repair as needed. Inspect all plumbing and check taps and toilets for any small leaks. Tackle those insect problems (as summer is their favourite season). Clean and repair your patio – usually, a good washing is sufficient, but your deck could require re-staining. Clean your garage.

Monthly tasks Inspect your heating and air-conditioning filters. Clean extractor fan filters with a degreaser. Inspect your fire extinguishers.

Quarterly tasks Test the panic buttons on your alarm system - remember to let your security company know first! Test all smoke detectors. Ensure that no corrosion has taken place on the battery terminal.

Biannual tasks Give your house a PROPER deep clean. Tackle appliances, wall tiles, windows, hard-to-reach areas, etc. Vacuum your refrigerator coils. If the coils get dirty, your fridge will require more power.
